Yarn Chick

Simple, adorable and fun!

Materials: cardboard, scissors, yarn, googly eyes, orange construction paper, glue, ruler (optional)

  • Cut an oval out of your cardboard *Children can identify the shape
  • Cut small slats around the perimeter of the oval to keep the yarn from sliding

  • Cut a long piece of yarn (you can always add more if needed by tying the ends together) *Children can identify the color of the yarn and practice measuring how long the yarn is with a ruler to work on number identification
  • Tape one end of the yarn to the back of the cardboard

  • Wrap the oval in yarn while occasionally sticking it through the slats *Children can count how many times they wrap the yarn around the oval

  • Tie the end of the yarn to the back of the chick

  • Use the orange construction paper to cut out a triangular beak and two legs *Children can identify the color of the paper and the shape of the beak. 2 year olds can practice cutting the triangle hand over hand while children 3 and up can cut it independently with supervision
  • Glue down the eyes and beak to the front of the chick and the legs to the underside of the chick

  • Enjoy!
