Waterfall Writing for 3 Year Olds

Materials: paper, writing utensil

  • Determine what your child will be writing (suggestion: first name)
  • On the piece of paper, draw the number of horizontal lines that corresponds to the number of letters in the word plus one additional line (i.e. cat has 3 letters so 4 lines would be drawn, brown has 5 letters so 6 lines would be drawn)
  • On the top line, write the full word your child will be practicing (if the word is Riley write Riley)
  • On the second line, leave the first letter blank and write the remaining letters (if the word is Riley write _iley)
  • On the third line, leave the first two letters blank and write the remaining letters (if the word is Riley write __ley)
  • Continue until there are no letters remaining
  • Have your child start on the first line and trace the entire word
  • On the second line, have your child write the first letter independently and trace the rest of the letters
  • On the third line, have your child write the first two letters independently and trace the rest of the letters
  • Continue until the entire word is written independently
  • Enjoy!
