Painted Butterflies

Shape identification, scissor practice, color identification, counting, color mixing, symmetry…this activity has it all!

Materials: paper, writing utensil, scissors, paint, pipe cleaners, glue

  • Fold your paper in half
  • Draw a heart on the paper with the bottom portion stopping short on the fold *Older children can draw this themselves for shape drawing practice! Younger children can practice identifying the shape*
  • Cut out the heart *2 year olds can cut hand over hand while children 3 and up can practice cutting independently while being supervised*
  • Open the heart and drip paint on half of it *Children can identify the colors they are using, count the number of drops they add or can be given a certain number and have to match their number of drops to the number given*
  • Fold the heart in half
  • Press down on the paper to transfer the paint onto the opposite side
  • Gently peel the two sides apart *Notice if any colors have mixed and discuss which two colors make one new color*
  • Allow time for the paint to dry
  • Fold the pipe cleaner in half
  • Twist the pipe cleaner together, leaving room for the two ends to stick out as antennas
  • Glue the pipe cleaners to the center fold of the butterfly
  • Allow time for the glue to dry
  • Enjoy!
