Materials: red, blue, yellow, green and black construction paper (if your child has mastered those colors, swap them out for pink, purple, orange, brown, black, gray or white), scissors, tape or glue, items of the same colors (bears, cars, play food, pom poms, etc.)
- Using the black construction paper, cut out 10 medium size circles (2 for each color to be the wheels on the train car)
- Using the black construction paper, cut out the front of the train
- Tape or glue two wheels on each full piece of colored construction paper
- Line the colored construction paper (train cars) up in a row, with the front of the train on one end
- Lay the color items in front of your child
- Explain that each item needs to be sorted by color and placed on the correct train car before it can “leave the station”
- Have your child sort each item into the matching color train car
- *Encourage your child to use the color words when describing what they are doing (“The red bear goes in the red train car. The blue bear goes with the blue dog.”)
- Once all of the items have been correctly sorted, pretend the train is ready to leave the station
- Enjoy!
