One game, so many ways to review!
Mix and match or focus on one skill at a time.
Materials: Jenga, marker
- Based on your child’s age and ability, determine which skills they should be working on
- Write the review skill or skills on the end of each Jenga block *Children can assist by naming the letters in the alphabet as you write them, counting as you write the numbers, brainstorming shapes for you to write, etc.
- Set up the Jenga game *Children can assist by counting three blocks at a time (one to one correspondence), identifying what shape the blocks are (rectangles), as well as what shape they create when three blocks are set next to one another (square), and stack them while alternating directions for each row
- Play Jenga: for your child’s turn have them name what is on the block they chose (both sides). For anyone else’s turn have the child confirm that the answers given are correct (i.e. Adult: I chose the numbers 46 and 82. Are those right? Child: Yes!). Other players can also pretend to struggle with an answer so the child can assist in order to give extra practice and boost their confidence by feeling like an expert (i.e. Adult: Hmm. I’m not sure if 23 or 24 comes after 22. Can you help me?)
5 year olds:
Math:
-review shapes (circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, rhombus/diamond, heart, star)
-answer the addition and/or subtraction facts
-identify numbers 1-100
-identify the dot numbers without counting (subitizing)
-name teen numbers the “say 10 way” (14 is 10 and 4)
-name the numbers that come before and after the number written (__13__)
-name the missing number (19 __ 21)
-count on from the number written (if 15 is on the block, the child would continue to count 16, 17, 18, etc.)
-compare numbers and name which is larger and which is smaller (8 11)
